Another. Then another. One by one, a stream of red emerged from the point between the pen and paper. Jack dropped his instrument and it rolled away onto the desk, but the increasing flow of red did not stop and began to drip onto the carpet.

 

Jack stepped away, his hands rising to his face, suppressing a panicked laugh that threatened inside his throat. He’d prayed for something to stain the white of his page and here it was - an unrelenting tide of red that pulsed from the paper in a rhythmic heartbeat. As the beat increased, the dripping and pouring grew louder. Within minutes, the patch of floor beneath the desk was sodden. The stain spread until it began to creep towards Jack’s toes. A sweet, metallic smell rose into the air and stung Jack’s nose and mouth. Its familiarity swept the grin from his face and a cold sting pierced his heart.
